We would consider our dance, the Carolina Shag, as being a dance with extremely deep roots, a sub-culture that is self-sustaining and a lifestyle that once it has infected you, it is very hard to leave behind. Many friendships and long lasting relationships are formed through our dance. More importantly, the dance brings together people of different generations. None is more evident than when you enter an establishment and see young adolescents having fun and dancing with their parents and grandparents.

We formed the Crazy Eights Junior Shag Dance Team in 2010. We say we did this out of necessity because we had a handful of Jr. Shaggers that attended Jr. SOS in July 2010 and they came home with a genuine interest in learning more and more and more. The sheer joy they came home with was contagious and soon we had a growing number of kids that wanted to progress and go the next level. We felt that the timing was right and the stars were aligned correctly and ventured on a limb and formed what was formerly known as the Crazy Eights Junior Shag Dance Team. That team had eight couples and let me tell you, they kept us running! After performing at the Grand Nationals Dance Championships 2011 and at several other functions, we closed our season and began to prepare for another year.

We wanted to keep this wheel moving and started dedicating another year of service to what is now The Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas, “Shag Fever”. The team worked very hard learning a new and much harder routine under the incredible help and choreography of Brennar Goree (for the second year). The team has performed at the National Living Legends (November 2011), Winter Jam (December 2011), “The Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas Showcase” at Lynn’s in Charlotte (March 2012), The Ft. Lauderdale Swing & Shag Beach Bash in Fort Lauderdale (July 2012), Junior SOS (July 2012), and performed at the 2012 Grand Nationals Dance Championship in Atlanta, GA in May 2012 in the Team Division and won 1st Place!

We are getting ready to start our 3rd season with The Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas! The 2012/2013 team is comprised of 6 Jr. Couples from North and South Carolina. Each one of them loves the Shag Dance and they are working hard to spread the Carolina Shag Dance as far and as wide as possible and preserve our dance!  Team Members are Kalin Ellis, Justin Burroughs, Kolten Ellis, Kaylee Bravo, Win Underwood, Sophia Spencer, Zachary Burroughs, Anna Victoria Jacobs, Isaiah Burroughs, Olivia Spencer, Michael Bravo, & Mary Elizabeth Jacobs.

Please contact us to see where The Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas is performing next or contact us to have the team perform at your event! They love performing their team routine and dancing for dollars! We are always looking for events to perform at that will help us to raise the monies needed for lodging, entry fees, wardrobe, meal expenses, etc. for the team. Any gifts or donations will go 100% directly to the expenses of the Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas and the team would be very appreciative. We are starting to raise monies needed for The Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas to travel to the USA Grand National Dance Championships (May 2013) and other Shag Events. The Team’s Mission Statement is to “Spread the Carolina Shag Dancing around the world and preserve the concepts!”

Even though the economy is in dire shape nowadays, charitable gifts and donations to organizations, such as ours, will bring pure joy to your eyes once you see how much our juniors love this dance. Be proactive and help the group accomplish their goals. Thank you for your consideration and feel free to contact us for any more detailed information about the team, sponsorships, or performances. If you would like to donate to the team, please make your checks payable to the Junior Shag Dance Team of the Carolinas and mail them to 175 Old Stagecoach Road, China Grove, NC 28023.

Sincerely,

Ashley & Tobitha Stewart, Directors
